Foundations in Information Technology
Hello YWAM IT. My name is Brad Holliday, and I am on staff with YWAM UofN Kona. I have been working with the IT team here for the last five years, and I just recently found out about this community. I am very interested in how others are doing IT around the YWAM world.
Right now our team is planning to run an upper level IT school this year. If you have any thoughts about IT training in UofN I would love to hear from you.
We are planning to teach what we have been doing here in Kona. We will focus on open source solutions as much as possible. Here is a quick topic list for the school.
- Computer Architecture
- Operating Systems (linux, windows)
- Servers
- Productivity Software (office, email, etc)
- Computer Networking (wired/wireless)
- Security
- Programming
- Web Programming
- Databases
- Videoconferencing

ITIL
I think you should include coverage on Information Technology Infrastructure Library(ITIL). It helps people understand the different segments in IT.
ITIL
Thanks for the input Sam. I have never heard of ITIL before. Are you implementing ITIL currently? It looks rather overwhelming. Any links that could help me digest this?
Wikipedia
Wikipedia is a good source for this. We sorta have it implemented with our IT department but with a small team many people carry several roles. I just think it's worth going over and explaining that certain people need to carry certain responsibilities to improve productivity. Keeping service desk separate from problem management people will help networks run more smoothly. I recently have been working with a guy from Microsoft and he recommends it to any IT department just to help organize the work flow.
Your results?
Brad, would you mind reporting back to us ... what you learned from this school, for example. What are the feedbacks you got to "redesign" the course?
I liked the stories found here:
FIT will be back again - are there any other information about how it went?
Greetings!
YWAM KB
Oh and one other thought: Maybe you could use the IT Category of YWAM KB as a learning platform?
You could use it in different ways:
- Let the student choose a topic he wants to know more, he reads the article(s), and presents them to the other students
- Let the student write up their knowledge on topics you are currently treating as a new article (or improvement)
- Let the students "experience" online collaboration
Anyway, we at YWAM KB would be happy to assist you in this!
